The Red Rum Handicap Chase - Aintree

The Red Rum Handicap Chase is a Grade 3 National Hunt chase which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run on the Mildmay course at Aintree over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 metres), and during its running there are twelve fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and it is scheduled to take place each year in early April.

The event is named in memory of the racehorse Red Rum (1965–1995), a winner of Aintree's most famous race, the Grand National, three times during the 1970s. Having been known previously as the Aintree Chase, the event was retitled the Red Rum Chase in 1997.

For many years the race was contested as a "limited handicap" (a race where a restricted weight range is specified), and in 1991 this version was given Grade 2 status. It became a standard handicap in 2001 (the "Red Rum Handicap Chase"), and the modified event was initially classed at Listed level. It was promoted to Grade 3 status in 2004.
